19 immigration detainees discharged after hospital stint for food poisoning

The detainees at Maldives Immigration’s detention center in Hulhumale’ who were taken to the hospital on Saturday after getting food poisoning have been discharged after treatment.

The detainees were taken to the Hulhumale’ Hospital on Saturday night.

Immigration initially reported that 17 expatriates were taken to the hospital for food poisoning. But in a statement on Sunday morning, the agency clarified that total 19 detainees were taken to the hospital; 16 males and three females.

A spokesperson from the Hulhumale’ Hospital told Sun that the detainees were treated at the Emergency Room and then kept overnight for observation.

All 19 were discharged in the morning.

The incident sparked concern from the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), which said it was closely monitoring the situation.

The human rights watchdog also called on the authorities to investigate the case as a serious issue.
