President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described the Dhivehi language as the secret behind Maldivians’ remaining true to their identity as Maldivians.

He made the remark via a post on X on Friday, commemorating International Mother Language Day.

In his post, President Muizzu said each word describing Maldivians’ identity and sovereignty is linked to the Dhivehi language. As such, he described Dhivehi language as the secret behind Maldivians remaining true to their identity as Maldivians, in the past, the present, and even the future.

February 21st is annually commemorated as International Mother Language Day.

The theme for this year’s International Mother Language Day is ‘Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day’, commemorating a quarter-century of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote mother tongue use.
