Parliamentary approval sought to appoint envoys to additional countries

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sought parliamentary approval to appoint non-resident ambassadors to additional countries.

A letter from the President, seeking approval for three nominees as non-resident ambassadors for three countries, was read out at Wednesday’s parliamentary sitting. They are:

• Current Ambassador of Maldives to Bangladesh Shiuneen Rasheed as non-resident Ambassador of Maldives to Bhutan
• Current Maldivian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Sareer as non-resident Ambassador of Maldives to Kuwait
• Current Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr. Salma Rasheed as non-resident Ambassador of Maldives to Switzerland

Subsequently, their names have been sent to the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee for review.

Another letter from the President, seeking approval for a nominee as a permanent representative to an international organization, was also read out during Wednesday’s sitting.

In this regard, the President nominated Ahmed Sareer as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the Organization of Islamic Corporation (OIC).

Notably, President Muizzu sought parliamentary approval to appoint non-resident ambassadors to Canada and Egypt on Tuesday.

In a letter, the President requested approval to appoint:

• Current Maldivian ambassador to the US Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as non-residential ambassador to Canada
• Current Maldivian ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Sareer as non-residential ambassador to Egypt

President Muizzu, on Tuesday also asked for approval to appoint permanent representatives to three international organizations.

He nominated:

• Maldivian ambassador to the UK Dr. Iruthisham as permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
• Maldivian ambassador to the UAE Mohamed Hussain Shareef as permanent representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA)
• Permanent representative of the Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva Dr. Salma Rasheed as the permanent representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO)

The nominations, too, were sent to the Foreign Relations Committee for review.
