A Brazilian national who attempted to smuggle drugs into the Maldives by concealing it in their body alongside a Maldivian nation who is suspected to have gone to receive the items have been arrested and remanded in custody.
The suspects have been identified as a 44-year-old Brazilian national who attempted to smuggle the drugs by concealing it in their body and a 39-year-old Maldivian man, Ahmed Hussain Farushan, who is suspected who have gone to receive the items.
Both of them stand accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives and use, possession and sale of drugs.
As per the court order, the drugs were seized during a control delivery operation conducted by the Police. A total of 107 bullets containing drugs were seized during the operation and its preliminary weight was placed at over one kilo.
The court order read that the trafficking attempt was suspected to be a planned act of a criminal organization.
The court ruled that sufficient evidence had been submitted against the Maldivian man suspected in the case. The evidence included statements from police officers who attended the scene. In this regard, the investigative officer said the preliminary results of the urine test conducted on the man came back positive for the drug, AMP.
Henceforth, the court cited him as a possible threat to society while ordering his remand in police custody.
The court also found that sufficient evidence had been submitted against the Brazilian national suspect in the case. They included Maldives Customs Service’s case handover form, CT scan report, statements from police officers who attended the scene and photos and videos showing the drugs in question.
Both of them have been remanded in five days. Thus, their remand will expire on Friday.
