Maldives’ leader thanks outgoing China envoy; reaffirms commitment to boosting ties

Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu conveyed his appreciation to Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin on Tuesday, with the latter set to leave Male’ soon following the conclusion of her tenure.

Wang paid a farewell call on President Muizzu at his office on Tuesday morning.

During the meeting, President Muizzu expressed gratitude for the contributions she made towards furthering the ties between Male’ and Beijing.

He also highlighted China’s crucial role in aiding developmental projects across the Maldives.

In turn, Wang expressed appreciation for the support extended to her by President Muizzu and his administration.

According to the President’s Office, she also “commended the government's resilience, remarkable achievements, and positive development throughout the year.”

During the meeting, the two also discussed the progress of the China-backed projects in the Maldives and explored potential areas for further collaboration.

Before concluding the meeting, they both reaffirmed their commitment to boosting the ties between Male’ and Beijing.

Wang assumed the role of China’s top envoy in the Maldives in September 2021.

With her tenure in the Maldives at an end, she has been making farewell calls on various top government officials in recent days.

Her call on President Muizzu comes a day after she met with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.

During the meeting, Hussain commended Wang for her dedication to strengthening bilateral ties between Male’ and Beijing.

They also reflected on the growth of bilateral relations between the two countries, highlighting successful collaborations in education, higher education, infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism.

Wang also paid a farewell call last week on Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel.

During the November 26 meeting, Khaleel thanked Wang for her efforts in improving bilateral ties between Male’ and Beijing.

He also credited her with playing a key role in elevating Maldives-China relations to a ‘comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership’ during her tenure.
