Islamic Ministry to launch MVR 30mn waqf project in Addu

The Islamic Ministry plans on launching a MVR 30 million project to develop a waqf building in Addu City, says Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

In a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon at the President’s Office, Shaheem said that 14 local councils and 10 atoll councils submitted proposals to run waqf projects in the opportunity to run such projects in islands.

Shaheem said that the best proposal was the one submitted by the Addu City Council.

“The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has decided to proceed with this MVR 30 million project. We have discussed funding with the Addu City’s mayor,” he said.

He said the Islamic Ministry discussed securing funding by either by providing equity from the ministry’s fund or by approaching the Islamic Development Bank.

Shameem said the ministry hopes to start the project in the beginning of next year. He said that once the waqf building is done, the government will not need to spend on the city’s religion-related matters such as construction of mosques, Quran competitions, and other religious initiatives.
