The land plots awarded under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme to applicants who are now deceased will go to their heir upon submission of court documents proving their inheritance.

The Housing Ministry announced the decision in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the heirs of deceased applicants must prove their inheritance at the court.

They must then submit court documents via the Hiyaavehi portal, and request an appointment to sign a new agreement.

9,003 plots of land were awarded under phase one of the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme, from land reclaimed or being reclaimed from Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhi.

The previous administration decided to issue 1,408 plots from Hulhumale’. But only 624 plots have been handed over so far. This includes 465 plots handed over last year, and 159 more this year.

The government has come under mounting pressure over the delay in the handover of the land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme and flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme – two housing schemes launched by the last administration.

Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar was summoned to the Parliament on Monday, and questioned regarding the delay.

He criticized the former MDP administration, and said that plots awarded “from the sea and the lagoon” cannot be truly considered land plots. He was unable to say when the government can begin handing over land from Gulhifalhu, but said that the handover process will be done from Hulhumale’ Phase II by the end of October.
