Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) said on Thursday that it is working on disbursing all outstanding payments to fishermen before the end of the day.
According to MIFCO, it the outstanding payments to fishermen amounts to MVR 52 million.
In a press statement on Thursday morning, MIFCO said it has been informed that the government is working on disbursing the outstanding dues to fishermen. The company said that the government was working on disbursing MVR 52 million before the end of the day.
However, the company said it cannot guarantee the payment will be disbursed.
It said that it would continue to share updates.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said that settling outstanding dues to fishermen would be the government’s top priority this week.
The delay in payments to fishermen sparked protests this week, in Addu City and Dh. Kudahuvadhoo. It followed similar protests in the capital, Male’ City, last week.
The ongoing protests in Addu has forced the shutdown of the Addu Fisheries Complex (AFC), located in the city’s Hulhumeedhoo district. MIFCO previously said it was working on resuming operations at the factory.
