The city council has decided to name a road in the Maldivian capital, Male’ City, after Palestine.
It was the Male’ City mayor, Adam Azim, who proposed naming a road in the capital after the Middle Eastern country.
He previously said that there were two unnamed roads in Male’. He suggested either naming one of those roads after Palestine, or renaming another road.
He asked for the opinion of other city councilors.
At a city council meeting on Thursday morning, the councilors decided to name the narrow road behind the Maafannu Madrasa as “Falastheen Hingun.”
The decision was unanimous.
Azim said that he proposed naming a road after Palestine to show that the Maldivian people stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, as Israeli forces continue to bombard Gaza, killing over 37,700 people.
Azim said that he also wishes to show the love the Maldivian people have Palestine, which is home to Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
The city council is currently constructing a pavement and doing other developmental works at ‘Falastheen Hingun.’
Once the work is done, the road will be reopened in a grand ceremony.
