President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Maafushi MP Hussain Riza to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Two parliamentarians are included in the composition of the JSC; the Speaker of the Parliament and an additional member as a representative of the legislative body.
Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim administered the oath of office to both Abdul Raheem and Riza during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning.
After the oath-taking ceremony, the President presented the official letters of appointment to the newly inducted members.
Parliament voted in favor of nominating Riza as the parliamentary representative at JSC on Monday. His name passed with a unanimous vote of 83, and was the only sole name nominated for the post.
Riza attained his higher education in the legal field. He previously worked as a registrar at the Criminal Court.
He is the brother of late Ibrahim Riza who served as the Guraidhoo MP in the 19th parliamentary assembly before his death in 2022 following a battle with cancer. His brother had also served as a member of JSC.
Then-Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain served as the parliamentary representative at JSC during the 19th assembly. She had also served as the president of the commission.
