President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called out to Israel to adhere to the rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stating that no country is exempt from international law.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, President Muizzu strongly condemned the deadly attack by Israeli forces on the tent camp in Rafah, where "displaced Palestinians were taking shelter."

Earlier, the president had welcomed the ICJ ruling on Israel calling it to halt its offensive in Rafah at the request of South Africa.

In a statement on X, President Muizzu said that Israel must open Rafah crossing to allow the safe passage of humanitarian aid.

He reiterated the establishment of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, calling it as the "only path to lasting peace."

"Together with the Government and the people of Maldives, I call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to violence and unhindered humanitarian access," President Muizzu said.

On Monday evening, the Minisry of Foreign Affairs had also condemned "in the strongest of terms", the continuous military aggression by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians.

The ministry also called to Israel to abide the emergency ruling of the ICJ, and urged to immediately halt its offensive in Rafah, and the international court's previous decision calling on Israel to "take all measures within its power" to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza.

After barricading the Rafah-Egypt border, Israel began its offensive on the Rafah camp earlier on May 06, and has continued to attack the settlement causing deaths of thousands of civilians.

Reports also said that nearly 1.4 million refugees from all over Gaza had gathered to Rafah for safety before Israel began its offensive.

Israel has continued to reject international calls for an immediate ceasefire, and said it would not comply with the recent ICJ rulings, claiming Israel had not launched a genocide against the Palestinian people.
