Over 1,000 candidates have applied for student loans from the government.

The deadline for student loan applications expired at 01:30 pm on Thursday.

The Higher Education Ministry, in a statement on X on Thursday evening, said they received 1,709 applications by the deadline.

“We will now check and verify these 1,709 application forms,” said the ministry.

Applications for student loans for higher education opportunities overseas opened on March 28. The deadline was initially set to April 25, but was later extended.

The applications originally opened for 500 slots in two categories; new students and students already enrolled in overseas programs.

But on Monday, while speaking at the ‘Ahaa’ public forum, Higher Education Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya announced that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had made the decision to grant student loans to all eligible students who applied for the current scheme.
