Non-discriminatory tech-innovation benefits for students: Dr. Mariya

Higher Education Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya said on Sunday that students must receive benefit of technological advancements without discrimination of their age and gender.

The minister made the remarks at the plenary session of the Global Smart Education Conference 2024 held in China. The conference is organized by Beijing Normal University in collaboration with UNESCO.

The Ministry of Higher Education said that Minister Dr. Mariya spoke on the future of higher education at this high-level dialogue session, where she focused on the digitalization of education in the Maldives, innovative advancements, and other transitional efforts.

She highlighted the challenges a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) such as the Maldives faced in its efforts and the prioritization of employing digital and AI-powered tools to help teachers and students.

The minister called for policies ensuring non-discriminatory access of technological innovation to students regardless of their financial status and social class. She also highlighted the importance of building a digital infrastructure with awareness on AI and disciplinary policies.

The Higher Education Minister further stressed on the importance of bringing teachers and students up to speed with the fast-paced technological advancements.
