President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states main opposition MDP’s influencing the judiciary has been proven with the High Court scheduling the verdict in former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s appeal shortly after Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam announced the party’s decision to submit a complaint over the delay in Yameen's appeal to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Speaking at a campaign rally of Mohamed Ali, who is contesting for Gadhdhoo constituency on PNC’s ticket, the President, underscoring his administration does not influence the judiciary, said MDP asserts control over JSC, due to the commission’s composition.

“JSC’s president is an MDP person. Parliament Speaker is an MDP person. There is an MP in JSC as well. Because full control of JSC’s president with MDP, it’s in their hands,” he detailed.

Speaker Aslam announced MDP’s decision to move moving forward to submit the complaint over the delay in Yameen's appeal to JSC on Friday.

Yameen, who served as Maldivian leader from 2013-2018, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for money laundering and bribery charges in connection to the sale of V. Aarah on December 26, 2022.

High Court scheduled the verdict in Yameen’s appeal for Thursday afternoon – months after hearings in the appeal concluded on November 21st. The former president’s supporters have strongly criticized the government over the delays in the verdict.
