Zakariyya appointed as member of Elections Commission

Hassan Zakariyya, who was serving as the secretary-general of the Elections Commission (EC), has been appointed as a member of the commission.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the appointment on Monday, pursuant to Article 168 (b) of the Constitution and in accordance with Article 4 (a) of Elections Commission Act.

Zakariyya was presented with his letter of appointment in a ceremony held at the President’s Office. His oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain.

Zakariyya replaces EC’s former vice chairman Ismail Habeeb, whose term expired in March.

Zakariyya received parliamentary approval for his appointment on April 1, with a unanimous vote of 39.

He was nominated for the position by President Muizzu on February 20.
