President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to reclaim 30 hectors from the large lagoon surrounding L. Maavah.

Maavah was the first stop in the tour of L. Atoll which President Muizzu embarked on Thursday. He received a warm welcome from Maavah, which lies isolated from other residential islands in the region.

After meeting with members of the Maavah council and women’s development committee, the president addressed a gathering attended by the local population.

Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu said that instead of the previously planned 15 hectors, total 30 hectors will be reclaimed from Maavah’s lagoon.

President Muizzu said he made the decision to solve the housing crisis facing Maavah. He said that he plans on running a housing project once the land reclamation is done.

He added that resort development projects will begin near Maavah soon, which will create job opportunities for the island’s residents.

“My entire focus is on producing results. I do not want things done late. And neither would the people. So, shine all the paths that will speed up our initiatives. The biggest thing we need is cooperation from the Parliament. We haven’t received this cooperation the last four months. I hope the people will ensure that we receive this cooperation in the future,” he said, referring to the upcoming parliamentary elections.

President Muizzu said that his administration needs cooperation from the Parliament to approve budgets and loans, and that it is therefore crucial for the ruling coalition to hold a majority in the legislative assembly.

After his tour of five islands of L. Atoll, he is scheduled to depart to Addu City on an unofficial visit on Friday, and return to Male’ on Saturday.
