President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Wednesday, has declared Monday, July 28th as a public holiday in conjunction with Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations.

Maldives marks its Independence Day on July 26th.

The President’s Office said July 28th has been declared a public holiday due to the extensive lineup of events planned for this year’s Independence Day, as it marks the 60th independence anniversary.  In this regard, the Office detailed that important events have been planned for both Sunday, July 27th and Monday, July 28th.

July 26th is a Saturday. As such, alongside the weekend, government employees will receive a four-day holiday for Independence Day this year.

Maldives marks Independence Day in commemoration of the day it gained independence from British colonial rule.

Maldives became a British protectorate in the 19th century.

The country gained total independence from the British on July 26, 1965, following the signing of the Declaration of Independence by then-Maldivian Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir.
