Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has revised the waste disposal rate from general vehicles, from MVR 0.75 per kilo to MVR 0.50.
The decision is aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's instruction, WAMCO said on its Saturday press release.
All vehicles entering waste transfer stations in the Greater Male' Region must pay an entry fee of MVR 150 per trip.
From now on, the weight of the waste carried by the vehicles would be gauged against the maximum carrying capacity of the vehicles.
While general vehicles will be charged MVR 0.50 per kilogram of waste, vehicles of government offices and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will be charged MVR 2.66 per kilogram.
WAMCO began charging MVR 0.75 per kilogram of waste from general vehicles on March 01, 2023.
President Muizzu earlier highlighted the difficulties faced by the citizens in disposing waste, and pledged to take corrective measures.
He promised to reduce the disposal fee from MVR 750 per ton to MVR 500. Previously, general vehicles were charging MVR 1,600 per ton which was reduced by the current administration earlier on February 24.
According to the president, WAMCO was in dire circumstances when the current government took charge, and said steps were taken to rectify this.
