President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday night, has refuted allegations by main opposition MDP, claiming projects initiated across the Maldives during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration have been halted.
He refuted the allegations while speaking at a PPM-PNC campaign event at Hiyaa Park area in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
In this regard, President Muizzu claimed that the former administration executed “one-sided agreements” in hanging over projects which could incur losses to the government while providing benefits to private parties.
The President refuted MDP’s claims that his administration has halted projects that were proceeding at a fast pace with numbers.
He detailed that 27 projects pertaining to water and sewerage across the nation had been halted when the current administration assumed office, adding the current administration has resumed these projects and is carrying out 74 projects pertaining to water and sewerage at present.
He further detailed that 30 projects pertaining to harbor development, land reclamation and inner seawall had been halted when the current administration assumed office. While these projects have now been resumed, President Muizzu said a total of 90 projects pertaining to harbor development and land reclamation are now underway.
The President said seven airport development projects that had been halted at the time the current administration assumed office have now also been resumed.
Speaking further, President Muizzu detailed that road development projects at 17 islands had been halted when he assumed of on November 17th of last year over nonpayment of funds. While these projects have also been resumed – the President states a total of 26 road development projects are presently ongoing.
Underscoring that 84 projects pertaining to various kinds of stadiums and courts had been halted, President Muizzu said 71 projects out of this have been resumed; some of which that has now reached completion. 48 projects pertaining to various kinds of stadiums and courts are still ongoing, he added.
President Muizzu said 20 projects pertaining to the development of mosques had been halted when the current administration assumed office. Alongside these projects, a total of 42 projects pertaining to the development of mosques are currently underway according to the President.
The current administration has repeatedly stated that the former administration’s projects were halted because payments had not been made to contractors – amounting to MVR 9 billion in total.
