Maldives call Israel to honor UN ceasefire resolution

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called Israel to fully comply to the UN Security Council's resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Security Council on Monday evening passed the resolution seeking for an immediate ceasefire on Israel's ongoing attacks on Gaza, that has claimed over 32,000 Palestinian lives according to latest reports.

"We commend the adoption of the long awaited UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan in Gaza," President Muizzu said on X.

In his post, President Muizzu added that he hoped UN Security Council's decision would bring timely relief to the people of Gaza, and "strive to embrace the truit spirit of Ramadan in the face of adversity" and Israel's continued attacks.

He further underscored the need for international community to uphold the momentum set by the Security Council in finding a permanent ceasefire and an immediate end to the perpetuation of genocidal acts.

A total of 15 countries in the Security Council on Monday evening voted in favor of demanding an immediate ceasefire, while the United States abstained from casting its vote.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield had blamed Hamas for the delays the council faced in brokering a ceasefire deal for the Palestinian people, and condemned the military organization.

While it has been over six months since Israel began attacking Palestinian settlements in Gaza, experts view UN Security Council's ceasefire resolution as a short-term victory that could pave way for a long-term solution.

Over 90% of the 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza have been forced to displace to safer areas due to the continued shelling and attacks by Israeli forces.

With the death tolling continuing to rise every day, the survivors are left facing hunger and lack of food.
