President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says he wishes to fulfill all his electoral pledges, but that its up to the people to give him that chance.

President Muizzu, who is on a tour of southern Maldives, made the remark while addressing a gathering in Thinadhoo on Tuesday night.

Speaking at the gathering, President Muizzu noted the mega project to develop an international airport in the southern city, and provided assurance he will run more projects needed to develop Thinadhoo to the level of a city.

He asked for more public engagement in running the projects.

“Things can be done the hard way. But it can’t be done the best way, in the greatest speed or to perfection. Therefore, if I get full cooperation from the people in the coming days, we will be able to get things done better and at a faster pace than how we have been getting things done amid hardship the last three months,” he said.

He said that he wishes to fulfill all pledges in his five-year manifesto.

“I want to fulfill all my pledges. I made the pledges based on the people’s aspirations. I want to be someone who delivers my pledges. It is up to the people to give me that chance,” he said.

President Muizzu said the people have the power to give him that chance through the vote, referring to the upcoming parliamentary elections. He has previously stated that a supermajority for the main ruling PNC is crucial for his administration to deliver its pledges.

Speaking further, President Muizzu said his administration is focused on reforming the Maldivian economy.

At Tuesday’s gathering, the Maldivian government signed a MoU with Thailand’s Pan Pacific Corp. to develop an international airport in Thinadhoo. President Muizzu said the project will be completed within two months of commencement, and will involve the construction of a Code F runway and a modern passenger terminal.

50 hectors of land will be reclaimed from the Thinadhoo lagoon as part of the project.
