No registration to be required to receive donated staple food

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar states arrangements will be made to receive staple foods which will be donated by the government in conjunction with Ramadan without registering.

In a post on X on Friday night, Minister Adam Shareef said concerns have been raised by many over the registration requirement for Male’ residents who wish to receive staple foods.

Therewith, he said the government will make arrangements for Male’ households to receive the items without registering.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to distribute 10 kilograms of rice and flour to all households for the upcoming Ramadan.

He announced the decision while speaking to the press at the Velana International Airport after concluding his state visit to China.

Speaking to press, President Muizzu said his administration is also working on ending Maldives’ dependency on a single country for essential commodities such as rice, sugar and flour, and to have essential commodities brought in from other countries as well.

He said that Maldives has reached an agreement with Turkey, and has placed the order for the first shipment.

“We haven’t just arranged for the supply. In a first, this Ramadan, the government will donate a 10 kg rice bag and a 10 kg flour bag to each and every household,” he said.

President Muizzu said he hopes to increase the quantity next year.
