Adam Shareef: Councils committed to move forward with the government

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef and former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef, on Friday, remarked that island councils remain committed to moving forward with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

He made the remark in a post on X, after former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s departure from PPM, the current PNC administration’s coalition partner, to form a new political party after conflicts came to a boil within the coalition.

Local Government Authority (LGA) in collaboration with Baa Atoll Council conducted a special workshop for island councils in Baa Atoll under the name ‘Association Ideation Workshop’.

Adam Shareef said he had the opportunity to have an open discussion with councilors on the sideline of the workshop which helped identify difficulties faced by the atoll council and island councils.

“Councilors are committed to moving forward by cooperating with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration,” he added.

He further added that the future was looking bright.

The remark comes after Yameen’s resignation from PPM, citing the PPM-PNC coalition’s leadership’s refusal to follow his instruction in the affairs of both the coalition and the government or seek his counsel in these matters. Yameen has also decided to form a new political party for which efforts have already commenced. Preparations are underway to submit to Elections Commission (EC) for approval to form the party on Sunday.

Adam Shareef was previously one of Yameen’s closest aides. During Yameen’s administration, he also served as the defense minister.

Adam Shareef’s remarks on Friday indirectly confirm his stand with the government.
