President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states efforts will be initiated this month to end indefinite detention for suspects remanded in custody for the investigation of various crimes and de facto arrests.
He made the remark while delivering his first presidential address at the opening sitting of the last session of the ongoing 19th parliament on Monday morning.
In his address, President Muizzu spoke on various topics of importance.
In this regard, the President said his administration’s main policy with respect to upholding the law was to reduce crimes. He underscored modernizing the prison system to provide inmates with a compassionate environment for rehabilitation as a policy of his administration as well.
“Ending indefinite detention for suspects remanded in custody for the investigation of various crimes is an electoral pledge of mine. Will commence efforts to end indefinite detention this month,” he said.
On this note, he said the necessary amendments to the law will be submitted to the parliament in the course of the session which commenced today.
Speaking further, President Muizzu said the judiciary has been operating without the influence of the government since he assumed office.
He further affirmed that his administration will undertake additional efforts to ensure even more freedom to the judiciary, and in this trajectory, file the amendments to reform the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to the ongoing parliamentary session.
He also pledged to take immediate action if any government official is found to be exerting over the judiciary.
