Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following her re-election as the prime minister for the fifth term.

The president, in a message, congratulated PM Hasina on behalf of the Maldivian government and the people of Maldives, recognizing her leadership and commitment to the people of Bangladesh.

In his message, President Muizzu also highlighted the Maldives and Bangladesh's longstanding history of close neighbourly relations based on mutual understanding, respect, and shared values.

He expressed that the relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh will contribute to mutual prosperity and benefit both nations under PM Hasina’s leadership.

PM Hasina's Awami League (AL) won a total of 222 seats in the election held this Sunday, with independent candidates following in second with 63 seats.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the elections raising questions over the fairness of the election, after Hasina denied calls to resign and let a neutral caretaker government hold the election.

Ahead of Sunday the election, Bangladeshi protested against the election, even setting ablaze some polling stations.
