President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to cut 20 percent from the monthly rent of social housing units in Hulhumale’ Phase I.

He made the announcement during a campaign event in Hulhumale’ on Saturday afternoon for the main ruling PNC’s Male’ City mayoral candidate Aishath Azima Shakoor.

“I’m pleased to announce that the rent on all flats in Hulhumale’ Phase I will be reduced by 20 percent starting next month,” he said.

President Muizzu said he made the decision in light of the current economic situation, with small and medium businesses down, resulting in a decrease in people’s income.

President Muizzu said that he understands that people have a tough time paying the rent, and that the government therefore wants to help.

He said that the 20 percent cut from the rent will be managed by the government, and that “people don’t need to be worried about it.”

President Muizzu said that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Housing Ministry are conducting necessary calculations regarding the monthly maintenance fee, and will announce a decision later.

The rent reduction comes after the government recently waived off fines for non-payment of rent on the flats.
