The solution to the issue of flooding in Male’ City requires redeveloping all the streets and building a better stormwater drainage system, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
He made the comment while speaking to the press after visiting homes in Male’ on Sunday night, to assess the from extensive flooding due to nonstop torrential rain.
President Muizzu said that the current stormwater system, while operational, is not effective in dealing with extensive flooding such as the situation faced on Sunday. He noted that the system is being upgraded, but said it will not provide a sufficient solution.
He said that his administration believes the solution lies in redeveloping all the roads, and installing a new stormwater system with wider pipes and stronger pumping system.
“Then, In Sha Allah, homes, property, lives, livelihoods and businesses will be safe, even in such a situation,” he said.
President Muizzu said the administration has similar plans for other islands.
He added that the administration also plans on enhancing the capacity to provide emergency relief.
“We will, In Sha Allah, work to strengthen the entire disaster management system, including the provision of relief to households in emergencies, the assistance that people require, the supplies, temporary shelter and so on,” he said.
He said that relevant authorities were working on assisting the people affected by flooding.
