A foreigner, jailed pending the outcome of his trial at Maafushi Prison, has died.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) identified the deceased as a 59-year-old Swiss national, Peter Thomas Duss.
They detailed that Duss suddenly lost consciousness while inside his cell following which he was immediately transferred to Maafushi Prison’s medical center, where he was given CPR. As per Corrections, doctors declared him at 4:01pm Tuesday evening after he had not been breathing following CPR.
Duss is an individual who has been remanded pending the outcome of his trial on suspicions of attempting to traffic cocaine into the Maldives.
Corrections said Duss’ death was immediately notified to his family, Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and National Integrity Commission.
Corrections added that they had not taken note of any health conditions faced by Duss.
A foreign convict at Maafushi Prison also died earlier this year. It was a 29-year-old Bangladeshi national serving a seven-year prison sentence in connection to a sexual misconduct case on April 21st.
