Addu gang violence: All suspects jailed pending trial’s end

The four suspects who were arrested in connection to the violent fight between two gangs in Addu City’s Hithadhoo on Friday night have been remanded in custody pending the outcome of their trial.

Police told Sun on Monday that the suspects were presented before Hithadhoo Court for a remand hearing, during which the court had ordered all of them to be remanded in custody pending the outcome of their trial.

Police identified the arrestees as an 18-year-old, a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 23-year-old.

Friday night’s fight left a 30-year-old Maldivian man seriously injured with stab wounds. He was initially treated at Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) before being transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ City on Sunday morning.

Police are investigating the case further.

Another gang fight was reported from Addu City on Sunday evening which saw a 20-year-old Maldivian man injured by a sharp object.

An official from AEH said although the youth is being treated at the hospital’s ICU, he is in stable condition. As per the official, he had sustained stab wounds to his stomach and shoulder.

Nevertheless, the official said efforts were underway to transport him to IGMH for further treatment.

A violent fight also broke out between two gangs in Male’ City last Wednesday.

Subsequently, Police have heightened security in both cities.
