MVR 400 million has been allocated in next year’s proposed state budget to reclaim land in K. Fushidhiggaru Falhu – as part of a mega project to solve the housing crisis in Male’.
President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to begin land reclamation in Fushidhiggaru Falhu within the first month of office, and complete the project within his first year.
The Finance Ministry submitted an MVR 49.5 billion budget for 2024 – drafted with input from Muizzu’s office - to the Parliament on Monday.
The budget has MVR 400 million allocated for the reclamation of Fushidhiggaru Falhu, and MVR 118 million for housing projects.
Total 4.5 billion has been budgeted for construction of housing and social projects. This includes MVR 2.5 billion in recurrent expenditure and MVR 2.04 billion in capital expenditure.
MVR 286 million is allocated for Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC)’s housing projects.
Muizzu’s manifesto includes plans to issue 65,000 plots of land or flats from Fushidhiggaru Falhu, Giraavaru Falhu, Gulhifalhu, Hulhumale’ and Male’.
During his presidential campaign, Muizzu said he planned on reclaiming 1,200 hectors of land from Fushidhiggaru Falhu.
He said that it will ensure there isn’t a single person in the Male’ area without housing.
