Maldives eyes record two million tourist arrivals in 2024

The Finance Ministry estimates that a record two million tourists will visit Maldives next year, according to the information on the proposed 2024 state budget.

The Finance Ministry submitted an MVR 49.5 billion budget for 2024 to the Parliament on Monday.

According to the figures on the budget, the ministry expects 2.01 million tourist arrivals next year – which is higher than the 1.8 million tourists expected to visit Maldives this year – and will be the highest number of tourists recorded in the country’s history.

The Finance Ministry expects to generate a huge income from tourism next year. Including;

  • TGST: MVR 9 billion
  • Tourism Land Rent: MVR 2 billion
  • Green Tax: MVR 1 billion

It also expects to generate an additional MVR 2 billion from airport taxes.

  • Airport Departure Tax: MVR 1 billion
  • Airport Development Fee: MVR 1 billion

Maldives topped 1.5 million tourist arrivals last week, and expects to reach 1.8 million arrivals by the end of the year.

The country had recorded its highest tourist arrivals in 2019, with 1.7 visitors.
