Parliament unrest: Democrats call to probe any possible criminal offenses

The Democrats have called on relevant authorities to probe any criminal offense, if it had occurred, in light of some MPs from the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) damaging property at Sunday’s parliamentary sitting.

In a statement following the incident, Democrats said MDP MPs had confronted and harassed administrative staff of the parliament. The statement also noted they had damaged Counsel General Fathimath Filza’s computer system and her phone and bag.

“The (administrative staff} were confronted, thrown profanities at, and their belonging were damaged. Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Sharif had breached the speaker’s chamber and unlawfully sat at the speaker’s chair,” the statement further read.

The statement stressed that the party’s parliamentary condemned the acts in the harshest terms. Describing the acts as backs, the party called on to refrain from such acts inside the parliament.

The Parliament had been scheduled to hear the no-confidence motion against Nasheed on Sunday. However, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, Nasheed’s cousin and fellow Democrats member, called in sick.

Therewith, Parliament’s Secretary-General Fathimath Niusha to postpone the motion for Monday.

MDP has accused Nasheed and Eva of working together to stall the motion. They have submitted a case to the Supreme Court over this.
