West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef, who is among the pioneers of the formation of the newest political party, The Democrats, has announced his decision to run for the post of the party’s president.
Hassan Latheef announced his decision via a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday.
In his post, he said he had already submitted his application for the post, appealing for cooperation in facing the challenges ahead.
Democrats opened applications for posts within the party on Sunday, with the deadline for applications set at November 15th.
This includes 22 posts from six categories. The internal election to elect individuals for these posts will be held on December 2nd.
So far, no one apart from Hassan Latheef has applied for the post of presidency.
Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim was appointed the Democrats’ parliamentary group leader on September 14th.
The Democrats was formed by breakaway MDP, who are supporters of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, following major clashes with pro-government members. The party was officially incepted on May 24th.
They contested September’s presidential election, coming in third, with the party’s candidate, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb receiving 15,000 votes.
