Cases of diarrhea prevalent across Maldives

The number of diarrhoea cases has remained prevalent in the Maldives throughout this year as per the Health Protection Agency (HPA)'s statistics. 

The number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting reported this year is generally higher than the number of cases reported in the past three years.

While the number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting increases from July to August every year, the cases of this disease have increased significantly in August this year. There were 10,451 cases reported in August. So far this month, 7,160 cases have been reported.

The highest number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting were reported in the Male' Atoll this year. That's 318 for every 10,000 people. There was also an increase in reported cases from Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls. 

In addition to diarrhoea and vomiting, common colds and viral fever have also increased exponentially this year. HPA said both diseases have increased in many atolls across the country.

According to the HPA, the number of cases of the common cold has increased this year compared to the previous three years. The highest number of common cold cases were reported in September. Which was 39,481.

Of the common communicable diseases in the country, a large number of cases of four diseases were reported them as of September this year.
