Cases of diarrhea, influenza, nausea rise by 400

According to Health Protection Agency (HPA) statistics, cases of nausea, influenza, and diarrhea – the most commonly reported viral diseases in the Maldives – have been rising.

Statistics from HPA, as of June 15th to July 5th show an increment in cases of diarrhea and nausea with the highest number of cases reported from Greater Male’ area.

HPA confirms a total of 1,547 cases of diarrhea and nausea reported across the country last week, while 1,107 cases were reported the week before. A total of 1,109 people received treatment for the same ailments the week before this, HPA reported.

With 3,763 total cases reported in the reviewed three weeks, 2,370 of these cases were from Greater Male’ area.

HPA also said cases of influenza rose from May onward, with the highest number of cases reported from Male’ area. From June 15th to 21st, a total of 45 cases were reported while 86 cases were reported in the following week. More than 106 people received treatment for the same ailment last week according to HPA data.

While a total 239 cases of influenza were reported in those three weeks, 85 percent of these cases – 228 patients – were reported from Greater Male’ area.

Patients who contracted influenza were advised to cover their nose with facial masks while going outdoors and cover their nose with a tissue or clothing when they need to sneeze. Health professionals also cautioned patients to properly clean their hands before eating, to ensure deterrence from nausea and diarrhea.
