Muizzu: New administration will prioritize mental well-being

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that a high priority will be placed on the mental well-being of the people in his administration.

In a tweet on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Muizzu described mental well-being as a basic right entitled to by every individual. He added that there were important tasks that needed to be undertaken to ensure this basic right.

“This basic right can only be ensured by establishing a stable and healthy environment in addition to facilitating mental healthcare without any obstructions,” he said.

Muizzu assured his administration will place a high priority on this.

Mental health illnesses are on the rise in the Maldives.

The current administration, during the past five years, undertook multiple efforts to improve mental healthcare in the Maldives. Mental health centers were established at IGMH and Hulhumale’ Hospital for the first time as part of these efforts.

In addition to this, they also established the services of psychiatric services in five regions across the Maldives.

October 10th is annually marked as World Mental Health Day.
