Australia praises Muizzu's 'Pro-Maldives' foreign policy

The Australian Ambassador to the Maldives has praised President-Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s “Pro-Maldives” foreign policy.

Ambassador David Jessup paid a courtesy call to Muizzu on Tuesday. 

During the meeting, the Australian Ambassador assured he would work to further enhance relations between Australia and Maldives during President-Elect Muizzu's electoral term, and take the relations to a new height. 

He assured that Maldives will have Australia's full support and cooperation in various areas of mutual interest to further strengthen the Maldives-Australia relationship.

Speaking on the close relationship between Australia and Maldives in various fields, Muizzu extended gratitude to Australia for its assistance in human resource development in addition to the opportunities provided to Maldivian students in the field of education.

He also expressed his wishes to further expand and strengthen the friendly relations between Maldives and Australia during his presidential term.

Muizzu won the presidential election by a huge margin and news of his victory reached the world's major newspapers describing him as "pro-China". The headlines of all the newspapers regularly read by millions of people have described Muizzu as "pro-China", or someone influenced by China. The BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Al Jazeera and the Washington Post were among the news agencies that reported the news as such. And, there is no other story in the Indian media.

Muizzu has responded to this. Explaining how he will run the government, Muizzu said his foreign policy is pro-Maldives. He said he would maintain relations with all countries that accept the policy.
