The Democrats seek a unity government

Director General of Transition and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) (R) and interim Chairperson of the Democrats, Hassan Latheef (L) speaking at a press conference held on October 9, 2023.

Director General of Transition and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) has said today that the Democrats have asked President-Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's new government that is about to be formed to create a united government.

He said this while speaking at a press conference near the STELCO building where the President-elect's office is located after talks with the newly elected government and the Democrats ended.

Adhurey further said that the Democrats want to create a government that is loyal to the people, based on past experiences.  He said that this is what was discussed between both parties.

“They said they also want to participate and improve this situation. They want to have a good government that runs as a national united government,” Adhurey said.

In addition, the interim chairperson of the Democrats, Hassan Latheef, spoke at the press conference and said that the Democrats also have views on the formation of Muizzu's government as a powerful government that can provide good services to the people. He said it is important to make the People’s Majlis a parliament that facilitates the government to do what it wants.

"At the same time, we think it is important for the government to have a parliament that can do a lot of things the government wants. We have just met to discuss how we, the Democrats, can work with Dr. Muizzu's government,” Hassan said.

The Democrats have repeatedly said that they will play a part in President-Elect’s government. Both Hassan and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have said the same thing recently.

The Democrats received seven percent in the first round of the presidential elections which were held last month. They decided not to back any candidate in the second round.
