Muizzu pledges to forgive all existing parking fines

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu speaks at a campaign event in L. Fonadhoo.

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, criticizing how vehicle stickers have been issued by the current administration, fining the respective owners of vehicles, has pledged to forgive all these parking fines.

Speaking at a campaign event in L. Funadhoo on Wednesday night – Muizzu said the parking fines were a result of the current administration’s flawed policies.

He sarcastically said the fining, without facilitating alternative parking space, was an electoral pledge of this administration.

The opposition coalition’s presidential candidate, who is also the Male’ City Mayor, stressed the lack of parking space in the city. Despite this, Muizzu said the administration has not allowed the council to develop a building for parking.

“Every youth has been slapped with thousands in fines from stickers,” he added.

Muizzu also said the current administration’s biggest revenue source was fines. He pledged to forgive all the parking fines issued in this regard.

He also pledged to develop multi-story parking buildings in different areas of Male’, as presently planned, citing this would establish parking spaces for all taxis, private cars and a significant number of motorbikes.

“Will also bring an end to begging for garage letter. An end to the Transport Ministry’s flawed policy of allocating parking spaces from private households of the general public,” he stressed.

Statistics show over 10,000 vehicles were issued parking stickers by the police in the first quarter of this year alone.
