Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj, who left the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday, has decided to back the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Siraj announced his decision to support Muizzu via a tweet on Monday night.

“Although Laamu Atoll was secured by MDP’s presidential candidate in 2018’s election, we will change this in this year’s election,” his tweet read.

Siraj’s intention to leave MDP was rumored during the clashes among MDP earlier this year. However, Siraj had backed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the party’s presidential primary.

Despite this, he had been absent from MDP’s political activities recently. His resignation from the party was followed by rumors of him joining another political party.

Siraj, who worked as a lawyer previously, entered the political arena in 2019, as a candidate in the parliamentary elections.
