Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj has decided to support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming presidential primary of main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), withdrawing support to the party’s leader, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
In a tweet announcing his decision – MP Siraj said that he decided to support President Solih as he believes it is important to back the candidate that could win the presidential election for MDP. He detailed that he took the decision after consulting with his constituency.
MP Siraj has previously strongly criticized the current administration’s policies at the parliament.
As MDP’s presidential primary looms – President Solih and Nasheed who are going head-to-head in the election are both campaign in atolls presently. The competition has deepened the divide between the two leaders of the party.
MDP’s primary is scheduled for January 28th.
