Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate of the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, has promised to make bone marrow transplants free for thalassemia patients.
He made during a campaign tour of HA. Utheem on Monday.
Upon arrival to Utheem, Muizzu received a plea from the island’s residents to facilitate the bone marrow transplant of a young thalassemia patient.
In a meeting with the island’s residents, Muizzu said that bone marrow transplants for thalassemia patients had been a top priority for former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He said that the government had sponsored the surgery of numerous patients through the Zakat Fund during Yameen’s administration.
Muizzu said that bone marrow transplants must be available to thalassemia patients through a sustainable system.
He said that he will ensure the surgery is available for free during his administration.
Muizzu made several pledges for Utheem, including the expansion of the island’s harbor and renovation of the island’s mosque.
He also promised to address the land shortage and beach erosion in the island, and to introduce ATM services and develop the island’s major roads.
