Torrential rain floods Male’ City

Torrential rain poured over Male’ City from midnight Thursday until late into Friday morning, resulting in heaving flooding in the streets of the Maldivian capital.

Many of the roads in the four districts of the city were covered in flood water, impeding both pedestrians and motorists.

The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service deployed firefighters to pump out the floodwater.

Maldives has been experiencing bad weather nation-wide, with the heaviest rainfall falling over central atolls.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, the heaviest rainfall between 08:00 am and 11:00 am on Friday was recorded in Hulhule’, with 71 millimeters of rain.

The national weather agency forecasts torrential rain and thunderstorms will prevail until at least 06:00 pm Friday.

Seafarers have been advised caution.
