People’s National Congress (PNC)’s leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) has stated that if Elections Commission (EC) rejects opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s candidacy, the case will be submitted to Supreme Court and won.

Adhurey made the remark at a press conference held following a meeting between the members of EC and the leadership of the opposition coalition.

Responding to a question by a journalist, Adhurey said Yameen’s candidacy form will be submitted once EC opens applications.

“For example, we will do what is necessary based on a decision taken by this place [EC]. That is going to Supreme Court if need be,” he said.

Adhurey stressed there was no doubt whether Yameen’s name will be on the ballot paper.

EC said they will open applications for the presidential elections on July 23rd with a deadline set for August 7th.

Yameen’s candidacy remains uncertain as his appeal of an 11-year prison sentence remains in progress despite the opposition coalition presenting him with the presidential ticket on August 19th
