Addu land reclamation: Maradhoo-Feydhoo reclamation completed in three weeks

The reclamation of Maradhoo-Feydhoo under Addu City’s mega reclamation project has been completed within three weeks.

Addu City reclamation project was officially inaugurated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on June 3^rd.

As of present, the reclamation of 76 hectares of land at Maradhoo-Feydhoo has been completed, effectively expanding the district in size.

Three islands of 8.3 hectares and two islands of 3.3 hectares are set to be reclaimed from Maradhoo-Feydhoo lagoon for tourism purposes under this project.

The project is contracted to Van Oord, a company from Netherlands.

194 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Addu under the project. The project also involves coastal protection of an 11-kilometer area.

Under the project, 90 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Hithadhoo, 23.3 hectares in Hulhumeedhoo, and 76 hectares in Maradhoo and Maradhoo Feydhoo. Land will also be reclaimed uninhabited islands for tourism.

The project which is funded with a USD 800 million line of credit approved by the Indian government via India’s EXIM Bank.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the project, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizaar said the council will begin efforts to formulate the land use plan with respect to the newly reclaimed areas in the course of next August. He also expressed intention to open applications for the Maradhoo-Feydhoo residents to apply for the newly reclaimed land before the end of this year.
