The power went out again in Addu on Monday, a day after the city was hit with a near two-hour blackout that latest into the early hours of Sunday.

Local residents report that the power went out in Addu at around 11:43 am Monday.

The city’s mayor, Ali Nizar told Sun that Fenaka Corporation, which provides utility services to Addu, had sent a message informing of scheduled outages in different areas of Addu.

He said that the Addu Council building itself is without power.

“They are having issues with their generator. It has been confirmed that there are issues with at least three generators,” he said.

The latest outage comes after the power went out in Addu at around 11:15 pm Saturday. The power did not get fully restored until 12:48 am Sunday.

Fenaka attributed the blackout to “an issue with a generator”, but did not provide details.

Addu, home to the largest residential population outside of Male’, has been affected for months by frequent power interruptions.

Fenaka – which provides utility services in Addu – installed a 1.8-megawatt generator set on February 21 to fix the power outages in the linked islands of the city. Another 1-megawatt generator set was sent on March 13, and a 1.8-megawatt generator on March 25.

But the city continues to be affected by power disruptions.
