Hassan Mughnee has been dismissed from his post as State Minister for Environment, following a tweet last week in which he called President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih a “thief”.

President’s Office spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed confirms he was dismissed Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Minister at President’s Office, Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) said that Mughnee’s tweet is in violation of the code of conduct for political appointees.

The tweet in question was made via Mughnee’s official Twitter account on Thursday. In addition to calling the president a “thief”, he described heads of state-owned enterprises as “incompetent”.

He named individual managing directors, and accused them of corruption.

The tweet was later deleted.

Mughnee, a member of Jumhoory Party (JP), had previously served as managing director of State Electric Company (STELCO). However, in 2022, he was appointed as a state minister – a job with a significantly lower paycheck.

Mughnee was replaced as head of STELCO by Ahmed Shareef.
