Shauna: Transfer station will revolutionize waste management in Male’

The new Male’ Waste Transfer Station under construction at the Industrial Village by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) will revolutionize waste management in Male’ City, states Environment Minister Aminath Shauna.

Shauna made the remark while speaking to reporters after a tour of the project site on Wednesday.

Shauna said the waste taken to the station will be charged according to weight, and segregated, and transferred to Thilafushi in containers.

“After segregation, the waste will be taken to be dumped. There are special containers for different types of waste,” she said.

Shauna said that with modern amenities, the new station will help revolutionize waste management in Male’ City.

“Our hope is that with this building and the amenities I mentioned, we will be able to provide the resources WAMCO needs and revolutionize waste management in the greater Male’ area, especially in Male’ City,” she said.

The new Male’ Waste Transfer Station is part of the Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project intended for Greater Male Area and Zone 3.

The station includes purpose-built waste tipping decks, administrative building and a weigh bridge to monitor and track waste statistics before being transferred to Thilafushi.

The station is a 65,000 square feet spacious space that can accommodate small and medium sized pickups, and dump trucks of different sizes.

The station will have a roof deck on the top floor to park WAMCO’s vehicles, while the ground floor will have space for waste management workers, vehicle maintenance garage, and a front office.

WAMCO is also building an adjoining administrative block. The six-story building will house Environment Ministry’s waste management and pollution control department, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lab, and WAMCO’s admin office.

The MVR 184 million (USD 11.97 million) project was awarded to China State Construction and Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), which is required to complete the project in 14 months.

Construction work began in February 2022 and is expected to finish in July.
