Maldives to begin introducing digital ID cards in late 2022

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Aminath Shauna states Maldives will begin using digital national identity cards later this year. 

Speaking at the ‘Viavathi Raajje’ conference underway in AA. Ukulhas on Saturday, Shauna said that the government had completed a lot of the work required to roll out digital IDs. 

“We are now doing data entry work,” she said. 

At the conference, councilors asked the government to put an end to the practice of limiting ID card issuance service to the capital. They asked for atoll councils to be allowed to issue ID cards. 

Shauna said that the government wanted to make it easier for councils to provide services using modern technological advances. 

“Despite the use of digital ID cards, we will also print ID cards at request,” she said. 

Shauna previously stated that digital ID cards would be rolled out in 2023.
