Elections Commission has announced the V. Rakeedhoo Council by-election will be held on May 6.
EC had announced plans to hold two by-elections last Wednesday; the Rakeedhoo Council by-election and the V. Thinadhoo Women’s Development Committee by-election.
The by-election in Rakeedhoo is for the seat allocated for women on the island’s council, while the by-election in Thinadhoo is for five vacancies on the island’s WDC.
Candidacy for the positions will remain open until 01:00 pm on April 6.
EC’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq told Sun that it marks the fifth time for the Thinadhoo WDC by-election to be announced in the last two years.
“V. Thinadhoo is has a small population. There are some 100 people there, including women, men and the elderly and the children. Half of them are under the age of 18. And some are aged above 60 and cannot or do not wish to be involved in the work,” he said.
Fuad said the commission had engaged in multiple efforts to elect people to the Thinadhoo WDC by talking to the council, but remained unsuccessful.
